Ghost Records: Two Waybills, One Minute, and a Broken Chain of Custody
In digital forensics, a chain of custody answers a basic question: who controlled an item, where, and when? PCI requirements for media containing cardholder data emphasize secure, logged, trackable movement. When a payment card is not delivered, the documentary trail must still account for every handoff.
The tracking image below is not the full answer. It is a forensic lead: two separate waybills share the same recorded return minute, while the underlying scan and audit details remain undisclosed.
The Matching Minute
Looking at the image below, we have two shipments with completely different tracking numbers:

The glaring forensic paradox here is that both shipments, despite their different virtual paths, had their statuses updated to (Returned to Sender/Shipper) at the exact same date and the exact same minute: (July 20, 2025 - 15:57).
The interface records time only to the minute; it does not display seconds, device identifiers, operator IDs, location codes, or the event source. Two manual scans within one minute are possible. So are container processing, delayed device synchronization, an administrative update, or a batch event. The timestamp proves synchronization—not its cause.
When the Public Record Becomes Unavailable
Later inquiries returned a claim that a waybill was "not found in our system", despite earlier written acknowledgement of the same number.
That response does not by itself prove deletion from the backend. The record may have been archived, migrated, removed from the public index, or made unavailable to a particular support interface. But none of those possibilities resolves the contradiction. Aramex should identify the retention rule, the record’s present location, and the complete event history.
The Logs That Would Resolve the Dispute
A complete answer requires the scan-event source, operator and device identifiers, facility codes, return-reason codes, proof of handover back to the shipper, and the retention history for both waybills. Without those fields, neither the customer nor the public interface can reconstruct custody.
Conclusion
A record can disappear from an interface without disappearing from every system. That is precisely why audit trails matter: a credible chain of custody must survive beyond a customer-facing search box.
This evidence is no longer a mere complaint about a delayed shipment. It is a documented discrepancy requiring the issuer and carrier to account for the cards and the records associated with them.
